Acne

Acne is one of the most common skin conditions. It typically affects younger people but it is increasingly affecting adult women as well. There are different types and grades of acnes (grad 1-mild to grade 4-severe) as well as different effective treatments.

Acne can be treated with products containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid that can be bought without prescription. This does not mean that the acne will clear overnight.

We offer two kinds of treatments for acne. The first one is a treatment that you apply to the skin which is called a topical treatment. Some topical help kill the bacteria, other work on reducing the oil. The second treatment works throughout the body like antibiotics, birth control and Isotretinion.

Hyper pigmentation

The main cause of dark spots in light-skinned individuals is sun damage. Sun exposure can cause an increase in pigment production that results in spotted hyper-pigmentation.

We recommend topical hydroquinone or retinol (an over-the-counter form of vitamin A) as the treatment of choice. When topical therapy fails, superficial chemical peels containing salicylic acid and glycolic acid may be used in combination with topical therapies to enhance results and improve the skin’s appearance. Daily sun protection SPF of 30 or greater is essential in preventing further sun damage and resulting dark spots.

Dermatitis / Eczema

It is rare for adults to get Dermatitis: dry and scaly patches appearing on the skin. Most people (90%) get it before age 5. About half (50%) of people who get Dermatitis during childhood continue to have milder signs and symptoms of as an adult. Is it not contagious, there is no need to worry about catching it or giving it to someone.

Treatment cannot cure Dermatitis but it can control it and prevent it from getting worse. We can calm the skin and stop the skin from thickening by creating a treatment plan tailored to every patient’s needs.

Allergy

From seasonal allergy, contact rashes to diaper rashes, every allergy speaks its own language and has its specific needs. After assessing the symptoms, through allergy tests if needed, we work closely with our patients to curate a treatment that is best for them and their lifestyle.

Infectious Disease

We are exposed on a daily basis to bacteria, viruses and parasites. A lot of times our skin reacts to these encounters and could result in an Impetigo, Herpes, Parasitosis (like scabies), and Mycosis like the Athletic foot.

We work closely with our patients to determine the causes of these skin reactions that are contagious. Infectious skin diseases are generally treated with oral and topical medication.

Psioriasis

Psoriasis is a condition that causes the body to make new skin cells in days rather than weeks. As these cells pile up, mainly on the knees and the elbows, they become thick patches on the surface of the skin.

Because psoriasis tends to be a life-long disease, we help our patients better understand it in order gain control and improve their overall skin care routine. Today, in the new era of the anti-TNF biologic drugs, patients can see almost 100% improvement in the clinical signs of their psoriasis.

Hair Loss

Everyone loses hair. It is normal to lose about 50-100 hairs every day. If you see bald patches or lots of thinning, you may be experiencing hair loss. There are many causes of hair loss like giving birth and stress. Some diseases and medical treatments can also cause hair loss, specially anemia and irregular thyroids.

The most common cause of hair loss is a medical condition called hereditary hair loss. We recommend treating hair loss early, before losing a lot of hair. The most common treatments are either oral or Minoxidil, applied to the scalp. It can stop hairs from getting thinner and stimulate hair growth on the top of the scalp. There are also laser devices that emit laser light that might stimulate hair growth.

Nail Disorder

It’s easy to get a fungal nail infection and it can spread to one or more of your nails. You can catch a fungal nail infection in a warm, moist place like a pool deck or locker room. If someone else has a fungal infection and walked barefoot there, all you have to do is walk barefoot in the same area.

Sometimes, nail fungus is hard to clear. Studies show that taking anti-fungal pills and applying medicine to your nails can be more effective than using either treatment alone. Our treatment usually begins by trimming the infected nails and scraping away debris under the nail.

Although nail fungus is the most common nail disorder that dermatologists treat, not every nail problem is caused by fungus, and there are several other conditions that may look similar, including nail psoriasis and nail trauma.

Pruritus / Itching

It simply means itching. Pruritus can be associated with a number of medical disorders, including dry skin, skin disease, pregnancy… Finding the cause of the itching and treating any underlying skin disease is the first step in solving Pruritus.

Depending on the cause, protecting the skin from Pruritus could be achieved through skin creams and lotions that prevent skin dryness, also through sunscreens and mild bath soap that won't irritate the skin. Taking warm - not hot - showers and switching to cotton clothing and bed sheets help heal and avoid Pruritus. We also treat it with antihistamines and topical steroids.
